Gilman Road Lime Kiln
Lime kilns were often built for the production of lime mortar for use in the construction of nearby buildings.
Calcium carbonate usually in the form of chalk or limestone was burnt (at temperatures in excess of 900°C) in lime kilns to produce lime (calcium oxide).
This was Norwich’s last working lime kiln, the preserved remains are hidden under this the garden at a block of flats in Gilman Road. It was last used in 1968. I have not seen inside but would quite like to!
