(25) 48 Bethel Street Undercroft
Updated 03/04/2020
NUMBER 48 BETHEL STREET
The house above was built in the late 19th century and was formerly a baker’s shop.

The undercroft beneath the house was built in the 15th century. It is on the street line and is made of brick.
The main chamber no longer has its vaulting, but there are two pointed barrel vaulted side chambers. The larger of the two is on the south side and extends beneath the pavement. It has a chamfered brick arch.
A more recent supporting wall cuts the chamber in two and only the right-hand half is open. The other half retains the arch but has been bricked up. The smaller chamber is on the north wall.
The west wall contains a shallow barrel-vaulted arch whilst the east wall is of 20th century construction. Access is via a trapdoor in the room above and ladder stairs. It is not known where the original entry was.
The undercroft is not open to the public though the owner of the property was kind enough to show it to me.
