5 Bedford Street Undercroft

5 Bedford Street Undercroft – NUMBER 5 BEDFORD STREET

The building above was built in the 19th century and is now a shop belonging to Jarrolds. It was formerly a warehouse.

The undercroft dates from the late 15th century. It is built of brick with flint side walls.

There are 2 bays with single-order chamfered diagonal ribs and 4 side chambers: those on the western side of the undercroft may have-been reduced in depth. It is ranged at right angles to and away from the street line.

It is not currently in use, probably because of the dampness, though there is a lot of unused shelving.

The whitewash on the walls is damp to the touch and discoloured in places, but otherwise the undercroft looks in good condition.
