St Andrews Hall Undercroft – ST ANDREWS AND BLACKFRIARS HALL

The undercroft is the oldest part of the friary complex. It was built around 1258 as a simple unvaulted chamber and probably used as the friars’ dormitory. It is very likely that the vaulted ceiling was added soon after 1307 and is an early manifestation of the use of brick in Norwich. It consists of 4 bays of brick vaulting with a central remade stone pier. There are doors and blocked openings on 4 walls.
It has been beautifully restored to become a favourite meeting place for small parties, board meetings and VIP receptions. It was for many years The Crypt coffee bar but is not now open to the public, though visits can be made by request. The high vaulted ceiling is quite impressive.
