(45) 37 St Giles Street Undercroft

NUMBER 37 ST GILES STREET
The building above dates from the 18th century and was until recently an antique shop.

The undercroft consists of a single chamber and is barrel-vaulted. It is made of brick which has been painted white. It has been divided for most of its length by a more recent support wall. It has a tiled floor. There is stone shelving at the end of the chamber. There is a hole in the vaulting on the right side of the dividing wall.
It is accessed via stairs from the shop through an unvaulted cellar.
There is another staircase next to the chamber, the lower part of which reduces the height of the vaulting.
The undercroft is set back from and parallel with street line.
There is also a separate wall arch away from and at right angles to the barrel-vaulted chamber.
The owner knew nothing of the undercroft’s history and as yet the only information I have found about it is on the NHE website which mentions a cellar under the back room recorded by Alan Carter in a 1978 survey.
