NUMBER 3 AND 4 THE HAYMARKET
The house above the undercroft was built in the late 15th century by John Curat who was originally a lawyer but became a merchant and it was modified in the 18th and 20th centuries.
It was for a long time occupied by different generations of the Back family and was for many years a public house. More recently it has been used for retail purposes and is currently occupied by Fat Face.

There are extensive cellars believed to date from the period when the area was occupied by the Jews and there is a fifty foot deep well in one of them.
The undercroft is built of brick and is at right angles to and away from the street line. It is accessed via the cellars and consists of 2 bays each within diagonal and cross ribs and there are blocked side chambers. It dates from the 15th or possibly 14th century.
It is not normally open to the public but can be visited on Heritage Open Days on bookable tours.
