(40) 3 Queen Street (Bank of Scotland) Undercroft
Updated 04/04/2020
NUMBER 3 QUEEN STREET
Until the 1980s a 15th century house stood on this site until it collapsed and was replaced by the present building which belongs to the Bank of Scotland.

Fortunately, the 15th century brick undercroft survived.
It consists of a large barrel-vaulted chamber which has been divided in two by the insertion of a modern wall with a central opening and a side chamber in the north wall. There is also a lamp niche in the west wall.
The undercroft is positioned parallel to and away from the street line. In the north-west corner is the 15th century brick, spiral stair entry, one of only two to remain intact in the city.
Access is via this staircase which is partly outside one corner of the undercroft and it appears to be contemporary with it.
The undercroft is used as a machine room.
