BISHOP’S PALACE (SALMON), THE CLOSE
In north east corner of the west façade of the palace there is a brick-built rib vaulted undercroft which was inserted beneath the hall by Bishop Salmon in the early 14th century.
It consists of four bays with a central octagonal pillar with hollow chamfered arches. The wide fireplace in the north wall suggests that this structure served as a kitchen. There was a prison below the undercroft.
It is currently used for recreation purposes by the students of Norwich School and is in good condition.
