(57) 12 Tombland Undercroft
Updated 05/04/2020
NUMBER 12 TOMBLAND
The building above dates from the 17th century (though the ground floor may be contemporary with the undercroft which dates from the late 15th century) and was formerly a house though in more recent times it has been a pub (from at least 1764 as the Fleece and as the Dukes Tavern from 1856 until its closure in 1908) and a shop.

After being empty for some time it reopened towards the end of last year.
The undercroft consists of four barrel-vaulted side chambers constructed of brick with flint walls. The two larger chambers are next to each other and share a central wall. They are pointed barrel vaulted and are positioned away from and parallel to the street.
They extend beneath the lane at the rear of the building. There is a lighting niche in one of them. The other two chambers are shallower and positioned at right angles to the street.
There is a short flight of steps lending to the street facing wall but there is no entry via them. Access is from within the shop.
